They work in a wide variety of nontraditional careers, ranging from a water-utility dispatcher to a police detective to a firefighter. "You spend so much of your life at work. You spend more time at work than you do with your family at home. I do, anyway. If you don't find something that you like to do, you're going to be miserable. You've got to just keep looking and looking until you can find something that you enjoy doing," says one woman. "I'm a single mom of four children. I want something that I can take care of my kids with or without someone," says another. "I think the biggest thing that was really to overcome was lack of self-confidence," says a third.
